The formation of the Bay of Bengal is tied directly to the same continental crash that built the Himalayan mountains. Around 130 million years ago, the Earth's southern landmasses were joined together in a single supercontinent known as Gondwana. The thick, tangled root networks of the mangroves act as a natural speed bump, slowing down destructive cyclone waves and holding the shoreline soil together against erosion.
